LE CERAMICHE DI MARTA
UPCYCLED CERAMICS
Up-cycling is the creative process of re-using by-products, useless or waste materials to create new products of better quality.
As humans, we are all producers and consumers of material. The incredible amount of waste that we have to face today is the result of our contemporary culture that encourages disposal over repair and re-use. Ceramic objects are usually handled with care, but what happen when our favourite bowl breaks apart? Most likely, the destination is the household bin and then a landfill. Have we ever thought about the end of life cycle of ceramics?
Upcycled ceramics is a collection of hand made stoneware tiles, decorated with ceramic sherds of three different colours: black, sea and wine. The sherds are obtained by crushing previous glazed pieces that found no use in my studio. Each tile is different and unique. Different patterns and designs can be created by arranging the pieces in different ways. Tiles are 14x14cm size and find applications in home and public interiors.
Ceramics production can be emissions intensive, but diverting from landfill and re-using ceramic products can reduce the environmental impact and gives us a chance to see that broken bowl transformed into something new.
